Frederick Douglass

“At this moment, I deem it safe to say, it is properly engrossing more minds in this country than any other subject now before the American people. The late John C. Calhoun—one of the mightiest men that ever stood up in the American senate—did not deem it beneath him; and he probably studied it as deeply, though not as honestly, as Gerrit Smith, or William Lloyd Garrison. He evinced the greatest familiarity with the subject; and the greatest efforts of his last years in the senate had direct reference to this movement.”
Frederick Douglass knew that this anti-slavery movement had been in the minds of the American people and it was the main thing on everyone's mind. John C. Calhoun was one of the biggest influencers of this movements. Since he was one of the mightiest men who stood up in the senate. He dedicated his last years in the senate to impact the movement. He was a bit late so when it came to pushing the movement he was a big help but it didn’t last long since he was the movements way of the government had knowledge of this movement. Honestly everyone wanted to help this movement but Calhoun was the man with the power, and the influence. All the people had wanted to join the movement Frederick Douglass even stated that Webster and Calhoun were two of the greatest men the nation had yet to give birth too. It seems that Calhoun was a poster child for Douglass and his movement.
