Douglass Declaration of Independence.

Frederick Douglass was a person who was able to teach himself how to read. In doing so he was capable of becoming a free man of free thought since he was able to think and read for himself he, therefore, ought to be free. In the spin of him being able to read, he then became a critic of the institution of slavery. Douglass in his speech pointed out that the fourth of July is a celebration for white Americans. Whereas for the African Americans the fourth of July was still a day for slaves and former slaves like Douglass.
“ This, for the purpose of this celebration, is the 4th of July. It is the birthday of your National Independence, and of your political freedom. “
Douglass states that it is THEIR celebration for their political freedom, in which Douglass states that this isn’t a celebration for African Americans. In which after reading this I would understand as to what he was stating about the Fourth of July. Since at the time it was still a day to mourn for slaves and former slaves like himself. Since he wanted to remind them that they were unable to keep their promise of equal liberty for all in the Declaration of Independence. What he pointed out was very true in the fact that it was a celebration for the white people of America since it was their day they got independence something African Americans didn’t receive. So, therefore, the holiday would technically not refer to them.
